Broccoli may be a good source of selenium, but only if selenium was present in the soil.
The gift of natural disasters to replenish soils
As bad as things look today in terms of produce mineralization, it's only going to get worse in the foreseeable future. The longer our soils are farmed with large-scale commercial farming techniques, the worse the situation is going to get and the lower the mineral content will become. |

Dirt is my term, bare escentuals uses the term "Jurassic, virgin soil," but by any name, soil is just another tetm for dirt, although I have to agree soil does sounds less, well, dirty). I have to admit that seeing dirt advertised as skin care is a first!
RareMinerals Skin Revival Treatment is supposed to contain 72 organic "macro" and "micro" minerals. However, you won't find 72 minerals listed on the ingredient label, just Organic soil Mineral Concenttate—so you have to take their word that these 72 minerals are present in the "vitgin" dirt. |

This is why floods, tsunamis and even volcanoes are very good for humans in the long-term, because they recycle the soil and deposit more minerals and new nutrients onto lands that can be used for farming.
Following the late 2004 tsunami in Thailand, the soils there produced outstanding crop yields because ocean water had been deposited onto the land. Ocean water contains all the minerals we need, and those minerals helped create an abundance of crops in the following season. |
| Of course, it can only absorb what is present in the soil. So even though a tomato should contain 56 minerals, you may be eating a tomato purchased at the grocery store that only contains 12 minerals or 7 minerals. You are missing out on all the minerals it could have.
This is why it's a great idea to eat Brazil nuts from time to time, because Brazil nuts are the only commonly available nut that's grown wild in naturally mineralized soils. Brazil nuts are mostly wild crafted, meaning that they are collected out in nature from wild plants, and they are very high in selenium. |
| For example, a lot of plants absorb selenium when selenium is present in the soil. But when selenium is not present in the soil, of course it's not available to the plant. The plant gets grown and taken to the store and sold and consumed anyway, even though it doesn't have the levels of selenium that it should contain according to traditional textbooks.
Interestingly, tomatoes can be grown to look very good cosmetically, even though they lack selenium and all the minerals that should be present. It really only takes three minerals to grow tomatoes or other vegetables. |

The key is to create new soil through soil probiotics. You activate the friendly microbes in the soil by composting kitchen scraps and treating the soil with love and positive intention. If the soil is respected, the earth will give back to the community by producing abundant plants that provide a sustainable, renewable food source.
The Center is getting tremendous yields out of the plants – yields that are not traditionally seen, even in organic gardening. |

Also, the soil in which our food is grown is depleted of the essential nutrients, even the soil in which 'organic' fruits and vegetables are grown. There are some organic farmers who do not remineralize their soil.
"Among the environmental contaminants at play when children have learning or behavior problems are insecticide and pesticide residues in our food and water and metal contamination, especially aluminum or lead toxicity. |

If you really want to do it right, grow your own food and apply diluted seawater (or trace minerals water) to your soil. That will give you the healthiest, highest mineral density plants available anywhere in the world. You can only grow them yourself because I'm not aware of any commercially grower using seawater, which is a great oversight. The source I recommend for seawater is called OceanGrown.com. They will sell you concentrated seawater that you can then dilute and apply to your garden. |

They must absorb them from the soil. And if our soils do not have these minerals, our plants will not have them either.
And they don't. Why? Organic fertilizers that contain these minerals are expensive and difficult to obtain. U.S. farmers manage their costs by using fertilizers that replenish the soil with only nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium
(called NPK). With these NPK fertilizers, farmers are able to grow good-looking grains and produce, though the crops remain depleted in all the other necessary minerals. |
| And in the almost seventy years since Beach's plea to the Senate, litde has been done to improve our nation's depleted soil; in fact, the situation is much worse today than ever before in history.4 Five major minerals (calcium, magnesium, chloride, phosphorous, and potassium) and at least sixteen trace minerals are essential for optimal health. Plants cannot create minerals. They must absorb them from the soil. And if our soils do not have these minerals, our plants will not have them either.
And they don't. Why? |

In the blinding sunlight, even in the relatively cool morning, before the highs that might reach 2700 F, craters, landmarks, soil and the earth - even the sky itself - all stood out in absolute clarity. For a mind accustomed to the soft filter of atmosphere, the sharp shadows, the changeable colors of the slate-grey soil all conspired to play tricks on the eye. |

Minerals on the skin, even plain talc or chalk or soil of any kind, aren't soothing in the least, and need to be washed off, not worn to bed, and this product is no exception.
Getting back to the mineral claims—is there anything to them? Does this "pure mineral concentrate" hold the secret to revitalized, youthful skin? Regardless of the purity of the soil, minerals cannot be absorbed by skin (their molecules are just too big), so any effect would be entirely superficial. |

| The number-one source of this cancer-fighting mineral is the soil in which plants are grown. soil in the Great Plains states contains adequate levels of selenium, so products from this area, such as whole-grain wheat, are generally good sources of selenium.
Helpful: If you are at an increased risk of cancer (due to family history, exposure to secondhand smoke or other carcinogens), consider taking a 50- to 200-microgram (meg) selenium supplement.
Important: If you are currently undergoing treatment for cancer, talk to your doctor before taking selenium.

Ultimately, when you analyze the soil that that plant is growing in, there are certain key minerals that are missing, and if you put those minerals in the soil, all of a sudden that plant's disease goes away. You can take that metaphor and draw it out into animals and humans, and you can see what's really the big thing here. Mineral-deficient food is really the ultimate cause of all the food problems that we have today. That's why we have weakling plants that need to be sprayed with pesticides and have artificial fertilizers. |

Because of the unnatural situation today of mineral depletion in our soil and, therefore, in our bodies, it may be useful to supplement with minerals. The crucial question is whether the minerals sold in nutrition stores or pharmacies are capable of replenishing the mineral supply to the cells of the body. The answer is, "Highly unlikely!"
Minerals are commonly made available in three basic forms: capsules, tablets, and colloidal mineral water. Before the depletion of soils, plant foods were our ideal mineral provider. |

According to some historians, however, this sacred character was mostly associated with the use of soybeans as a soil fertilizer because of their nitrogen-fixing properties: soybeans, like other legumes, including beans, string beans, peas, and lentils, are able to absorb the nitrogen present in the air and transfer it to the soil. Legumes are industrious and efficient plants, delivering benefits to both health and ecology: they enrich the soil in which they grow, producing highly nutritious substances over a relatively short period of time. |

Also, microbes and rootlet fungi in the soil must be present and healthy to enable the plants to absorb minerals. Some agricultural regions are low in certain minerals. Certain agricultural practices can kill some of the soil organisms that assist the uptake of minerals. Organically grown plants may have a more complete spectrum of minerals.
Minerals are inorganic elements. Minerals are not destroyed by heat in cooking or processing. Minerals are, however, susceptible to being leached out into cooking water that is discarded. |

The existence of that apple is based on numerous inputs that may be highly detrimental to the health of the planet as a whole: The burning of fossil fuels for farming and transportation, the use of chemical pesticides that wash downstream and poison aquatic ecosystems, the use of artificial fertilizers that lack real soil nutrition, the destruction of microbial life in agricultural soils, the loss of biodiversity and the subsequent decline in wildlife populations, and so on. |

Not only that, but anytime soils absorb pesticides, those residues remain in the soil. They leech into the roots of plants, and they end up in the food crops. So if soil, even if it goes organic, has ever used in its farming practices a pesticide, there's going to be some contamination.
We've polluted ourselves on this planet and in our bodies to an extent that we can't escape these contaminates, even if we are living on a deserted island in the Pacific, or if we are living in the Artic. These toxins come and find us. |

Conversely, populations in areas with low selenium in the soil have been found to have higher cancer incidence. Supplementation with selenium has been found to decrease the risk of prostate cancer. Unfortunately, the risk of one type of skin cancer (squamous cell carcinoma) was found to be increased by selenium supplementation. Further research is needed to clarify selenium's role in cancer prevention.

Soap berry saponins can even be used to cleanse the soil and help rid it of toxic substances.
You can even make a natural garden pesticide out of soap berries, and use it to protect your plants from pests without poisoning your food or soil. It's truly an astounding solution for earth-friendly cleanliness, and it's provided by Mother Nature. |

So if you get rid of the soil, but still provide the nutrients to the plant roots, they're going to be just fine. In fact, you can increase yields through this technique versus growing them in soil. I've done this myself in many experiments, in which I've planted the same plants in soil vs. a hydroponic system. I have found much faster growth and greater yields in a hydroponic system. Hydroponic systems do require electricity, and they take some effort to learn how to operate correctly. But they can be very rewarding. |

Women get different amounts of iodine in their diet, depending on the iodine content of the soil and water, as well as the types of food they prefer ro eat. Plant foods grown in the so-called goiter belt areas of the country (the Great Lakes region, the Midwest, and the Intermoun-tain states) lack iodine because the soil and water are iodine deficient. Today, iodine deficiency is considered rare in the United States due to the widespread distribution of foods from areas of the country sufficient in iodine and due to the availability of iodized salt. |
